Amesbury is a residential townhome community in the serene setting of Shorewood, once part of the “Big Woods” forest covering Lake Minnetonka. The neighborhood contains a variety of 92 townhomes and courtyard homes spread across more than 54 wooded acres and three wetlands.
Amesbury, along with the sistering neighborhoods Amesbury West and Amesbury North, makes up what was originally part of the 120-acre Amesbury family farm. Like Amesbury, Amesbury West features 32 residential units with various courtyard homes and townhomes. In contrast, Amesbury North consists of 37 beautiful single-family homes.
Having been part of the family farm for William Amesbury, it was in 1965 when a tornado that stretched for miles hit Shorewood and Deephaven, severely damaging the family farm and homestead. Deciding to part with the farm after the storm, the family sold the property to the developer Jim McNulty, who, in the 1970s, built the planned residential development. Honoring the Amesbury Farm while remaining in step with the natural forested setting, McNulty incorporated the mid-century modern architecture by architect Willis Lampert Walling ensuring nature views and privacy for each of the neighbors utilizing rolling berms and the winding roads around the three ponds in the neighborhood.
The homes in Amesbury tend to be smaller, ranging from around 1,500 to 4,500 square feet. The community was designed to provide homeowners with low-maintenance living options for those downsizing from larger homes and preferring a turnkey lifestyle. Many residences have been updated with modern amenities and finishes to meet today’s standards.
In addition to the natural setting, Amesbury features a neighborhood association pool with a cabana, tennis courts, and paddle tennis. Recent sales range from $300,000 for townhomes to $925,000 for courtyard homes.
